A glance behind revealed the black van inching up on their left. D.J.'s lips curved into a smile. She had them now. Spying her exit, D.J. pushed down on the accelerator once more. |

''I thought we were getting off. Why are you speeding up?" |

"Mind your own business, which is keeping your head down and your mouth shut, and let me handle this." |

As she'd hoped, the van also increased its speed, moving up on her left. The man who had shot at them before again leaned out the passenger window, rifle in tow. D.J. eased off the gas a fraction to allow the van to creep forward until the vehicle rode even with the Explorer's rear bumper. |

The exit loomed to the right. The rifle holder to the left took aim at the back of her head. D.J. waited until the last possible second, then yanked the wheel to the right. The window directly behind the driver's seat erupted inward, and glass rained across the back seat. The rental company wasn't going to like this. |

McCall started at the explosion, the back of his head bumping against her pelvic bone. D.J. hissed in pain. |

"Stay," she ordered, and he did. |

The Explorer bounced over the grassy median and roared down the exit ramp. The black van continued straight on the highway. |
